Assignment 1-3

In the article, “Romancing the Screen: An Examination of Moving from Television to the World Wide Web in a Quest for Quasi-Intimacy” by Tracey Bowen, the audience that is being reached is those who are true television buffs. These people are the ones who look forward to their favorite television show every week and want to learn all they can about the actors that are in these shows. These people have found the World Wide Web as their place to find the information about their favorite show as well as joining chat groups or blogs in order to talk to others about the television show.
Tracey Bowen reaches this specific audience by talking about how, “Historically, television viewers have escaped through their own private ‘‘window on the world’’ in ways that transported them to distant places and people through reconstructed imaginings of what their lives could or ought to be. The computer screen however, is the gateway to new forms of negotiation and relationship building by enabling individual imaginations to meet with the collective imaginings of others through various online communities of television fans. These communities develop around particular television program inspired Web sites and the threaded discussions on program-specific bulletin boards (Bowen, 2008).” Therefore the article allows a television fan the ability to see what the entire article talks about how television and the internet have combined to give the viewer a wider range of ways to find out about their favorite shows.
I will take several things away from this article that I may not have thought about before. The first thing I will take away from this article is that there are people that get really involved with television shows. These people feel as if they are one with the characters and can’t wait to see what happens next. Secondly I will take away the vocabulary associated with this article. When I hear someone talking about how they can’t wait to see their favorite show or have visited the web in order to talk with others that like the same television show as them. This article overall has allowed me to think about my own favorite television shows and realize that I can find out more information on them by just searching the web. I also have the ability to speak with others who also enjoy the same television shows as me.

  1. I just heard on the radio that within the next ten years you will be able to be interactive with your tv. You will be able to experience what the characters on the show feel. I was interested until the radio personal reminded the audience that not only would you feel the excitement of a football touchdown but alos the pain of a late hit.

  2. I thought your article was very interesting and so very true! The internet has opened a whole new world up for people. You can order from all over the world or visit as many countries as you would like in one day sitting in your living room just by searching the web! It really has made the world an even smaller place! Even this class would be an example of this article. We all sit in our living rooms or office and participate in a class without even living our house! The internet is truely amazing!!

  3. This article was really great. I find that blogs are great for television shows. I really like the show "Friday Night Lights" but no one I know watches it. Going online and blogging about it allows me to talk about it with other fans. It really connects people.

  4. Your article sounds very interesting and your analysis certainly does not surprise. People all over the world are addicted to television, texting on their phones and the computer. The thing that amazes me are people who I think are really smart and are depending on the computer to find them a soulmate. Whatever happened to sitting across the table from someone, looking into their eyes and talking. Back in September a huge windstorm came through Cincinnati. The wind knocked out power lines and took trees down everywhere. Some people were without power for weeks. We were fortunate because ours was only down for a little over 24 hours. We had to talk instead of watch. I think and hope a lot of people were affected by that and maybe came with "new" values.

  5. Doesn't this article remind you that there's a fine line between fan and fanatic? The internet is a valuable communication source, but it also provides a tool for people to take things to the extreme. As far as television goes though, I'm one of those people that DVR's shows, but never has time to watch them. With work, school, and the family, television isn't a priority for me.

  6. It is so funny that people get obsessed with tv shows like that! My obsession is Scrubs because it gives me a break from serious reality. I liked your analysis on it too. Its cool to see that the article taught something!
